The Building Code Commission (BCC) is tasked with protecting public health, safety and welfare by establishing our State's minimum standards of construction. Safe structures are achieved through a combination of code-based design and construction practices, and an inspection process that ensures compliance with the established standards. Model building codes provide the first and best line of defense against careless construction and sub-par materials which can lead to catastrophic structural failures. However, model building codes don't only ensure building safety, they also establish uniformity in the industry which helps keep costs down; cost savings which are passed on to the end consumer - RI property owners.
Under State Law, the Building Code Standards Committee is responsible for maintaining currency of State building codes such as mechanical, plumbing, electrical, conservation, accessibility, and minimum housing codes. The Committee also acts as a Board of Appeal to hear requests for variances or appeals from the State Building Code Commission or from local Boards of Appeal.
